Enlightenment

Confucius say, “Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.” His words are so true, but I know it as this. Before enlightenment the chopping of wood is a chore to get done. The carrying of water is heavy and tiresome, wishing to be elsewhere. After enlightenment, as you take the smooth, wooden axe handle you connect with the craftsman who created it. Feeling the weight of the hard metal blade. Hearing the crack of the wood and the ring of the metal as they connect. And, smelling the deep, woody scent from within as it splits. Gathering it up to warm loved ones. Then, to carry water, the sustenance of life, its liquid silver dance reflecting all the colours of our world. Carrying it carefully, not to lose a precious drop. Feeling blessed to be the one to bring this to others.

The same… just better.
Love you, Jane
